About Potato Farmers

West Bengal is an agricultural economy with 44% of its total workforce dependent upon agriculture. The potato plantation is distributed across nearly 4.6 lakh hectares in Bengal. The state is the second largest producer of potatoes in India, with its primary growing districts being Hooghly, Burdwan, Bankura, East Midnapore, and West Midnapore.Potatoes (primary horticultural produce of West Bengal) play a vital part in the agricultural economy of West Bengal. Primarily grown during the Rabi season, the sowing period for the vegetable is from mid-September to November, and the crops are harvested from December to March. The potato supply chain involves several intermediaries ranging from village traders, cold storage owners, commission agents to wholesalers and retailers. Potato is a highly perishable vegetable with over 80% moisture content, and hence the farmers cannot hold onto the product for long. This is where we step in.

The Crown Flakes cold storage facility is a necessary value add to the potato farming business in West Bengal, as are our manufacturing units.. Farmers, traders and wholesalers hire space at our facility to increase the shelf life of their produce. This prevents them from selling away their potaried during the procurement season at throwaway prices and incurring losses, thereby feeling demotivated,

Furthermore, our four manufacturing facilities were set up to give an impetus to the horticulture-dominated industry of Bengal and utilise our high-quality potatoes in a solution-driven manner. With our plant, we aim to establish a direct connection with the potato farmers and use their produce to manufacture our products, thereby building a paveway for a mutually, beneficial exchange. We believe that farmers are the backbone of our economy and their rights should be protected. Our passion for their cause and support for their perseverance has motivated us to take on several farmer-centric initiatives. Our dedicated team of research experts have implemented education and awareness-based projects where they have tirelessly visited the potato farming neighbourhoods around our multiple facilities to educate the local villagers about the right processes and latest know how. We have also distributed seeds to promote potato farming, and lent new farmers the know-how they need to begin their journey. We ensure we engage in fair pricing and trade, and encourage employment in our units from these potato farmers and their families. In various ways, Crown Flakes strives to help farmers achieve an equal footing in the supply chain with consistent, assured earnings and proper remunerative pricing for their yields.
